Blogging in 2019: everything you need to know

Posted by Stuart Walters on June 16, 2019

Companies from all sorts of industries have blogs as part of their content marketing and SEO strategies and more than ever, its important to be getting that content out there as frequently as possible. So, if you’re new to blogging or you need to improve your blogging game, what do you need to know?

Content is king

First of all, content is king. If you’re a regular visitor to our blog, you’ll have heard us say that before (and obviously we’re not the first people to say this). But, really, your blog is a place for you to put good content. If you’re content isn’t interesting or relevant to your audience then there’s no point in it being there. What can you contribute to your audience? What topics might be beneficial to them? How can you capture their attention? When thinking about improving or starting your blog you should always start with the content first. If you’re struggling to come up with new content, read the blog that we wrote about how to generate new content ideas. https://www.alexander-advertising.co.uk/digital-marketing/generate-content-ideas-blog/

Blogging takes time

You also need to understand that creating and maintaining a blog takes time and therefore requires commitment. Generating content ideas, creating content, optimising your content, and promoting it all takes times. The average blog post takes 2.5 hours to create and then there’s everything else on top of that. If you don’t have time to maintain a blog it might be worth thinking about focusing your efforts on social media content for example. If you’re thinking about starting a blog for your company perhaps make sure that one person always has time in their schedule to manage and maintain the blog and ensure that others are always contributing to ideas and content. That way you can ensure that there is always new and innovative content.

Optimising your blog is important

It is also important to think about optimising your content. If you write great, exciting, content you’re going to want people to find it and read it! Learning the basics of SEO can be really beneficial to improving your blog views and therefore the reach of your content. But, don’t be fooled, SEO takes a long time and requires constant dedication. If SEO means nothing to you, you can read some of our blogs on the basics here:

Guest blogging

We would also recommend thinking about guest blogging and blog post collaborations. There are so many opportunities for networking within your industry in the world of blogging. There are many different approaches to this. You could ask multiple people to contribute to one blog post (like DataBox do very well) or you could ask an expert to write in detail about one topic for example. You can offer to write some content in return or simply offer the backlink (this is for SEO purposes, you can read about this here). Often, it is mutually beneficial to people to contribute to other blogs in order to promote their own. The possibilities are endless! One of the best things about this is that you can offer expert advice on areas where you might have a few gaps in your knowledge.

So, what’s new in 2019?

Well, the blogging industry is still thriving. Not just full time bloggers, but within companies’ content marketing strategy we are seeing more and more blogs pop up. In Zazzle’s media report on the State of Content in 2019, 77% of marketers said that their top channel focus for 2019 is written content. This indicates that blogging is still a bit part of content marketing.

However, the report also suggests that there is a steady increase in the use of video. This use of video is often incorporated into blog posts: the video being the main feature and the blog containing a transcription-like format blog post.
